May 9, 2022 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel J.D. Description: Ultra Podcast Z continues with Ani-May, this time J.D. becomes a NOT disembodied voice and took the stage for a rare physical appearance. We talked shorter anime recommendations again this time (we did a similar episode last May) and we had completely new choices this time around. This episode moved really fast considering that there was no co-host this time around, an idea we had settled on early on actually, so this is something of a different UPZ. As for the anime, Manuel mentions a lot of Go Nagai shows, and J.D. mentions a lot of stuff that Manuel has never heard of, so it was a maybe it was a standard show after all! May 2, 2023 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Merliwuv Description: Ultra Podcast Z is celebrating Ani-May again and this week we were joined by Merliwuv to discuss the nine anime to get to know us! It's questionable how well we got this across, but we did talk a lot of anime and that isn't all that common over on UPZ. We did it by way of a 3x3 so both Merliwuv and Manuel had their own set to talk about in each half of the show. JD didn't have time to discuss his, but you can see it on-screen at the end. Ani-May is just kicking off and we have another four weeks to go so keep an eye out for more anime nonsense on UPZ very soon! March 4, 2023 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Photaku Description: Ultra Podcast Z crosses the 200 episode threshold and Photaku joined us for a special episode where we were going to discuss the recently announced Scott Pilgrim anime and exactly what makes a show "anime". We did eventually do that, though we didn't quite come to a consensus on that topic, but we spent a surprisingly long segment at the beginning to discuss the recent Scream 6 and the Scream franchise in general. This was a really fun discussion that covers things we usually don't talk about on UPZ and even the asides in the discussion were pretty on point. We did talk Scott Pilgrim and a lot of Science Saru stuff. Science Saru is the animation studio, who also worked on the Devilman Crybaby series, and are pretty much the only real "anime" link to this show. We discussed Teen Titan, Miraculous Ladybug, RWBY, and more in trying to define what is "anime", and while we did sort of agree on a definition, we didn't really agree on what shows MEET that definition. We closed with a brief bit about the recent nonsense regarding Ada Wong's voice actress from the Resident Evil 4 Remake and all we really have to say about that is to never be an ass to anyone for any reason, even if you're not a fan of their work on your favorite video game or whatever. Just don't be horrible. Let's hope that next week we're able to actually have that special episode 200 thing we planned a few weeks ago... February 21, 2023 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Haro Description: Ultra Podcast Z continues its streak of "Febru-any" episodes as JD took this somewhat off night to host an anime game show takeover. The games we played on this one are actually something of a preview for two panels that he will be hosting at Tora-Con next month. We originally intended to have a few more "contestants" on this one but we were forced to trim things down a little and only a non-video Haro was ultimately able to join us very last minute. This was still a fun show though, and seeing as it ran a little over time-wise, it was probably for the best that we didn't have more people on. Also, this show references two Drink Talk Learn episodes: a still-"lost" episode that featured JD hosting a much more difficult version of "Um, Actually", and an episode that featured Callie talking about the game show "Only Connect". (We have not been able to pinpoint the latter.) Speaking of these games, that's pretty much all this episode is, two anime versions of "Um, Actually" (which is also a game Molly hosted on a different Drink Talk Learn, but with a different theme, so three DTL episodes...) and "Only Connect", which was a lot of fun, if more difficult to play at times. Anyhow, check this one out, play along at home, and let us know if you'd like to see more game show-type content, but maybe with more contestants, in the future. February 14, 2022 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Pleiades Description: Ultra Podcast Z took place on Valentine's Day this past week and we're not totally sure if we've ever done that before... There's a first time for everything though! We had previously talked about how Valentine's Day is one of the worst days to go out and do anything since everywhere is crowded, and it was with this mentality that Pleiades rolled up for this episode! It was a lot of fun and we covered less than half of the topics that we had planned to. That wasn't because we went off track, or got lost, but because we had a lot to say about the things we covered and we also might have over planned this one. Anyhow, everyone was on point and there were a lot of funny bits here and there and it doesn't have as much as the ad hoc topics feel that a few recent episodes have. We also revealed at the top of the show that we are planning on ending (more like we're going to rebrand) Ultra Podcast Z and, while we probably won't do that at Episode 200 as we initially planned, that's something you can look forward to in the future as things like that always serve to revitalize things for a bit. Anyhow, check this one out and let us know your thoughts on our takes and maybe about what you'd like to see in a UPZ rebrand. February 7, 2023 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Photaku Description: Ultra Podcast Z is back to Tuesday after two random Wednesday shows! Photaku joined us this week as we tackled some interesting topics that mainly had to do with the Switch (upcoming Nintendo Direct and new sales records) and Hogwart's Legacy. The latter topic doesn't need any introduction as the game's release, and the reaction to it, has taken over just about every corner of the internet. We're not here to change anyone's mind, but we have our views and they were all laid out here. Elsewhere we talked about Sally Amaki voicing in both English & Japanese, the passing of the creator of the first known AMV, Anime Expo selling out of its first line of badges, and even managed to talk a lot about anime, which isn't something we do a lot on the show. There was a lot of randomness in between as well and it was a lot of fun all things considered. A more structured episode where we had a lot of topics lined up unlike the more freeform episodes that kicked off 2023, so let's just carry on from here! May 17, 2022 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Nyaru Description: Ultra Podcast Z had an interesting episode this time around complete with all sorts of sound issues. We actually lost the first five minutes or so of this show due to our sound not being on and not noticing it until we'd wrapped up some of our warm up topics AND when our audio was turned on we had more issues as Manuel was using the wrong mic and it wasn't caught until the next night's stream, so we apologize for all the audio nonsense in this one. Elsewhere we talked about some of the biggest, and our favorite, anime ships or pairings and went through a couple lists as well as noting some off the top of our head and from the chat. It was a bit of a narrow topic but it offered the chance to spin off into other things like Sonic The Hedgehog ship nonsense and accidentally discovering the "Shipping Wiki". We didn't really have a lot more to say after like thirty minutes and moved onto our other topic, some of our favorite anime openings which was a topic that took a few minutes to get going but when we DID we were rapid firing song titles and even singing along to the Cardcaptor Sakura theme so good time! Ani-May has been a little all over the place but that might be because there are a lot of anime conventions surrounding these shows and we're all a little frazzled. May 10, 2022 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Nyaru Description: Ultra Podcast Z never really left but we've been without JD and Nyaru for a few weeks now. They were both back for this one which is the second episode of "Ani-May" and we tackled the topic of Idol Anime, which is something we'd actually talked about covering before Offkai Expo but it somehow got away from us in the scheduling. There's the usual nonsense at the beginning and we got into a Nyaru-specific version of Offkai Recap which was actually quite interesting in a behind-the-scenes way and we even talked a bit about Maid Day (which it was when we had this episode) before going into the topic proper. We talked about a lot of our favorites like Zombieland Saga, Kirarin Revolution, and AKB0048. We then talked about some of the big idol anime franchises like PriPara, IDOLM@STER, Love Live, and why no one like Aikatsu even though it's one of the best. We then covered a topic we hadn't visited in a while: What Love Live did to the idol scene at large in the US, especially when it comes to anime conventions. An interesting topic that we all had something to get off our chests and we circled back around to more idol anime recs (check out Wake Up Girls!) and more before we closed this one out. A nice continuation into Ani-May so be sure to watch the next two episodes in this special month! Also, Nyaru is stinky, that is all.
