June 7, 2022 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Nyaru Description: Ultra Podcast Z took a break after Ani-May (mainly due to Fanime) but we're back and swinging with a topic close to our hearts: Convention Foods! Nyaru was back and while she wasn't at any recent conventions we're in full swing for the summer season. After the obvious "Top Gun: Maverick" dialogue was done, we talked about the most obvious of con foods: bacon wrapped hot dogs. We then talked pizza, Denny's, and basically any other standard con meal. Along the way we described some "extra" meals like taking time out of a busy weekend for a long (comparatively speaking) break at a sit-down restaurant. Of course we also talked snacks, alcohol, and all sorts of memes while sharing some anecdotes and taking some topic changes from the chat. It was a fun topic but we were a little off due to the break and we'll be well more in the swing of things as the month continues. What will the summer hold? Who knows but UPZ is about to come to it's FIFTH anniversary and that is a really wild thought. Maybe give us some topic ideas below... May 24, 2022 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Photaku Description: Ultra Podcast Z closed out Ani-May with a look back on some of our controversial hot takes we've had in other focused episodes. That would've been the main focus of this episode if not for the fact that Nyaru bounced earlier on (to be fair we'd kind of forgotten) due to her having to check out the new Top Gun movie. We continued on with Photaku but our intro topic, upcoming and recent anime conventions, kind of got away from us. Also, the audio at the start of the episode is a bit shaky but it gets better and we plan to make sure it works out all better next time. ALSO, this episode was going to come out last week, before/during Fanime, but we decided to hold onto it since we weren't going to have many (if any) streams when we came back, so disregard all the parts about coming to Fanime. Anyway, there were a lot of hot takes here... We discussed Vic a lot, probably to the dismay of JD, Manuel discovered that voice actor autographs have gotten fairly expensive in recent years, and we covered all the hot topics like dub vs. sub and whether something has to be Japanese to be considered anime. January 25, 2022 6:00 PM PST Hosts: Manuel Photaku Description: Ultra Podcast Z had a really fun and random episode that started with yet another last minute Nyaru cancellation! We had talked to Photaku about being on this New Year's Resolution episode though so for the third time he became the Nyaru replacement rather than a guest third host. It was also his birthday, a fact we didn't know when he was asked to be on and something we probably should've referred to more within the show itself. Anyway, even though we had a central topic to focus on this week we kinda lost the goat about twenty minutes in (complete with the usual technical difficulties) and talked a LOT about video games, video game collecting, and the process of selling retro game collections (as well as figures and stuff) in this somewhat inflated collectibles market. It was a somewhat random topic but the chat was really into it and JD didn't rein in the content as much as he usually does. Perhaps this is a taste of an eventual return to an A-to-J gaming podcast? Anyhow, we eventually did go back to the original idea and talk a bit more about new year's resolutions and Lunar New Year stuff before wrapping up. A random show all throughout that was fun nonetheless, if only Nyaru had shown up! December 7, 2021 6:00 PM PST Hosts: Manuel Nyaru Hinacchi Description: Ultra Podcast Z saw Nyaru come back after nearly a month away, mostly due to illness, and we also saw the return of Hinacchi who hasn't been on since earlier in the year! This is the penultimate final UPZ of 2021 and we decided to do our usual "Looking Back at The Year" kinda show with a little more randomness thrown in for fun. We actually had a pretty full outline but ignored it for the most part and only touched on some of it in the rapid fire section. This doesn't mean we didn't cover a lot of cool topics though. We talked Squid Game, Conventions this year and beyond, the current job market and the whole "worker shortage" thing going on right now, and there was a lot of crypto and NFT nonsense pretty much throughout this entire show for good measure! It should be mentioned that we had a lot of technical difficulties on this one, which was unfortunate because we had a lot of new viewers this time around, but it is what it is and we hope everyone just looks past the audio/video hiccups and the entire middle part where the show literally stopped lol. That was going to be edited out with a smooth jump cut to hide it (this has happened in the past) but it was missed so yeah... YouTube gets the full experience! Anyway, there were some good topics here so check it out, keep an eye for more Hinacchi appearances now that she is more settled these days, and tune in next week for the final UPZ of 2021 where we will be giving out "Golden Reggies" to our favorite things of 2021! May 25, 2021 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Nyaru Description: Ultra Podcast Z has a smaller show to close out May, and welcome in Summer, as we chose to not go with a third co-host this time around. We also were down to just one host for a long period as Nyaru had a lot of technical difficulties trying to get her Hot Tub setup to work. Yes, you heard that right, there was a lot of random VTuber Hot Tub nonsense in this one in between our random ramblings! Speaking of those ramblings, we talked about Kentaro Miura's passing (well that was mainly Manuel as this was during Nyaru's disappearance), a lot of random AKB stuff, and more on the return of anime conventions. Now, that latter topic would take up half the show but it was in a very different way than how we've covered it over the past year. Seeing how this is Fanime weekend (read: Memorial Day weekend) the sting of missing cons was hard and we discussed going back to the many that are popping up as the country opens up fully. Surprisingly lenient was Manuel who seemed ready to jump to Texas to hit up IkkiCon which was happening that weekend. Cooler heads prevailed but there was a much more open discussion on upcoming conventions and, even though it was decided that cons probably won't REALLY be safe until 2022, you'll soon get your chance to probably see us in person again! March 16, 2021 6:00 PM PST Hosts: Manuel Nyaru Janette Description: Ultra Podcast Z changed a little this week with the addition of a new mod for the live show so it's worth a brief mention that for the first time this "YouTube Version" is actually fairly unique from the version that was streamed live as it contains somewhat different visual elements and some of our references to the changing topics can't be seen here. Anyway, more on that in coming episodes but let's take a look at this one. This is the final episode in our "Quarantine Blues" series of podcasts. Not only has it been almost exactly a year since the beginning of the stay-at-home orders but we also made the promise that we'd return with "Episode VI" when those orders lift, and lift they have. It's been months since we've had an episode like this and they originally came out of the fact that we had a glut of hosts to draw from (since everyone was home) and we didn't really have anything to talk about since nothing was happening beyond event cancellations and topics that YouTube REALLY hated back then. While this one has a bit more form as we had an entire year of stuff to look back on, it's worth mentioning that it's a very loose episode that only had the barest of topics outlined, but it was still a fun episode to come back to and it was also a fun test on our new streaming format. December 15, 2020 6:00 PM PST Hosts: Manuel Nyaru Jasmine Description: Ultra Podcast Z is wrapping up the year with some episodes looking at 2020 and some stories that we either missed or that we felt like looking back on with more time to reflect on them. This week saw the return of Nyaru just in time to take part in the penultimate episode of UPZ. We didn't have as diverse a topic pool as we did the previous week, but we had two big topics that we really wanted to look at: Video Games In 2020 and Conventions In 2020/Things We Don't Want To See Return. Lots of hot takes and our personal opinions in the second one along with some predictions on how cons will return and what our views are on the online conventions that started popping off a lot throughout 2020 so be sure to check that out. The video game topic was a bit more all over the place and chill and included us actually running down the entire list of awards given at the recent Game Awards and our thoughts on the titles. We also talked some of our favorite games like Animal Crossing, Flight Simulator, and Among Us. We also talked a bit about Cyberpunk 2077 and what the deal with that game is... There was even some internet nonsense here but we were able to recover and carry on. April 21, 2020 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Konaru Molly Rubab Description: Ultra Podcast Z (and most of the rest of the country) is still in quarantine and this continues our new set of topical podcasts in quarantine and we decided to talk Con Nostalgia! Molly joined us again this time around (somewhat on the last minute though and with no camera) and Fake Star USA's Rubab (who was in a similar lockdown situation in Tokyo at the time of the show) hopped on to give us a unique take on the topic. Besides discussing our first convention experiences (boy were we young!) we dived deep into how different things used to be and told stories of a time where conventions were a wilder place of glomping, Homestuck trolls, yaoi paddles, and lacking in overall security. A wild place that existed in several hotel conventions that you don't see today, we also took a serious look at how the convention guest scene has changed/hasn't and why it's very important to obtain the correct visa for overseas guests. Anecdotes about guests from Rubab, bootleg merch from Manuel, artist alley stuff from Konaru, and more we rounded out this one with a lot of information, fun, and randomness!
